Student Success Bricks (1)

ScholarRx has released a new seven-module Student Success collection inside Rx Academy, a hub designed to help students and faculty get the most out of the ScholarRx learning ecosystem. These Bricks address a core gap in medical education: students face massive workloads but often lack clear guidance on how to learn effectively, manage their time, or study with purpose.

The collection brings together evidence-based learning principles, wellness strategies, and practical tools for academic and exam success. Each Brick is interactive, concise, and built to help students build durable habits that improve performance across preclinical coursework, clinical training, and high-stakes exam preparation.

The collection includes the following Bricks:

1. The Role of Well-Being in Academic Success

Students often believe well-being is something to “fit in later,” but research shows the opposite: cognitive performance, memory, focus, and emotional regulation depend on sleep, nutrition, movement, and mental health. This module helps students understand the link between health and performance, build sustainable habits, and recognize early signs of burnout.

2. Time and Energy Management in Medical School

This Brick confronts the realities of overloaded schedules, procrastination cycles, and unrealistic study routines. It introduces practical tools for prioritization, aligning difficult tasks with peak energy windows, breaking procrastination loops, and building study structures that actually hold up under medical-school pressure.

3. Learning How to Learn

Many students rely on passive strategies; rereading, highlighting, “recognizing” rather than recalling, leading to what psychologists call illusions of competence. This module distills the science behind how memory works and teaches strategies like active recall, spaced repetition, interleaving, SQ3R, dual coding, and the Feynman technique to make learning deeper and more durable.

4. Learning How to Study

While “Learning How to Learn” focuses on cognitive principles, this module focuses on application. Students learn how to build a realistic study plan, set SMART goals, design a study-conducive environment, manage digital distractions, work productively in groups, and use the Rx Study Planner to create a personalized approach.

5. Studying With ScholarRx

This Brick teaches students how to integrate ScholarRx tools: Rx Bricks, Flash Facts, Study Stream, Qmax, and Express Videos into an efficient study workflow. Instead of guessing how to use the platform, students learn when and how each tool should be used for foundation building, review, and assessment. It explains common learning pitfalls and shows how active learning within ScholarRx improves comprehension and long-term retention.

6. Master Multiple-Choice Questions

MCQs dominate medical assessments, yet many students never learn a systematic approach. This Brick breaks down how exam-style questions are structured, introduces a six-step dissection method, and explains how to avoid predictable errors such as misreading the question, falling for plausible distractors, or overthinking. It also reframes MCQs as a learning tool, not just an assessment tool, by emphasizing quality review, error categorization, and deliberate practice.

7. Prepare for USMLE®

This final module guides students through Step 1 and Step 2 CK preparation, from understanding exam structure to building a long-range study timeline. It outlines how to combine resources strategically, how to use question banks effectively, how to maintain motivation over extended study periods, and how to manage test-day pacing and anxiety.

How Faculty Can Use These Resources

Faculty and academic advisors can integrate the Student Success collection directly into advising, orientation programming, and academic support courses. Each Brick can serve as a standalone learning module or as part of a structured curriculum to help students strengthen study skills, self-regulation, and exam readiness. Educators can assign relevant modules before coaching sessions, embed Bricks within existing digital course spaces, or recommend specific Bricks to students who need support in areas like time management, test-taking strategy, or foundational learning skills. Together, these resources offer faculty a scalable toolkit to help students build strong academic habits and confidently navigate the challenges of medical school.

We’re excited to announce a set of enhancements that focus on making our platform more accessible, streamlining content management, and improving communication between faculty and students.

Supporting Student Needs with Personalized Time Accommodations

Medical education should be accessible to all capable students, and we understand that some learners may require additional time to demonstrate their knowledge effectively. Our new time accommodation system in Qmax empowers schools to provide personalized support while maintaining consistent assessment standards, particularly for students preparing for exams and their boards.

Faculty members can now set individual time accommodations for students through the Organization Roster page. These accommodations—available in 1.5x, 2.0x, or 3.0x multipliers—automatically apply to all faculty-created timed tests, ensuring consistency and reducing administrative overhead. Once set, the accommodation becomes part of the student’s profile, eliminating the need to adjust settings for each new assessment.

Setting time accommodations in Qmax Management

This systematic approach helps institutions:

  • Maintain compliance with accessibility requirements
  • Ensure consistent application of accommodations
  • Reduce administrative burden on faculty
  • Support students more effectively

Enhanced Communication with Automated Test Notifications

We’ve also implemented an automated email notification system for faculty-created tests. The system sends notifications 48 hours before scheduled test times, giving students adequate preparation time while remaining flexible enough to handle schedule changes.

These notifications include:

  • Test details and format
  • Mode (timed, untimed, or tutor)
  • Direct access links
  • Start and end times in the student’s local time zone

For tests scheduled with less than 48 hours’ notice, notifications are sent immediately upon test creation. The system also sends updated notifications if a test is modified and republished, ensuring students always have the latest information.

Improved Question Management in Qmax Create

We’ve also upgraded our Qmax Create platform, enhancing content attribution and version control to support the development of high-quality assessment items.

Enhanced Author Attribution

Recognizing the importance of faculty contribution in academic settings, we’ve implemented a new author attribution system. Questions now display the original author’s name on the My Questions page, maintaining this attribution even when the question is revised by others. This feature:

  • Recognizes content creators
  • Facilitates quality tracking
  • Supports academic accountability
  • Helps institutions track faculty contributions

Streamlined Version Control

We’ve introduced more flexible version control for questions in development. Authors can now delete question versions that are in Approval status and have never been published. When a version is deleted, its number becomes available for reuse, maintaining sequential version numbering for better organization.

For example, if version 12345.2 is deleted, a new version created from 12345.1 will reuse the 12345.2 designation. This ensures version numbers remain chronological and logical in the database, simplifying reporting and content management.

New Features: Empowering Collaboration and AI-powered Content Creation for Streamlined Learning Experiences

ScholarRx is excited to unveil a suite of powerful new features and enhancements designed to make your life easier. Our focus remains on empowering faculty and deans to create exceptional learning experiences while streamlining workflows and fostering collaboration.

Bricks Create Collaboration

You may be familiar with the Brick Create Collaboration feature (or the idea of it) that allows the owner of a Brick to grant editing permissions to others, which is a step beyond the multi-author function that provides read-only access. Bricks Collaboration enables collaborative editing, empowering multiple contributors to shape the content of a Brick sequentially.

Important Note: When a collaborative user is modifying a Brick, the Brick will be locked to avoid editing conflicts with other co-authors.

To add new users to a Brick and grant them editing permissions, please perform the following steps:

1. Open the Brick and click the credit line.

*The ‘Authors & Contributors’ modal will display and provide a method to search for a user by first/last name or email. Any person who has a ScholarRx account may be added as a collaborator; the school or organization can be different from the author’s school or organization*

2. Choose the desired user, select ” Can edit,” and click ” Save Changes.”

*Users granted editing access as Brick Collaborators will be notified via email, including a link to the Brick, informing them of their collaborator status. After being added as an editor, the Brick will display on the user’s ‘My Bricks’ page under a newly created ‘Collaborative Bricks’ tab.

Messages You May See When Collaborating

Currently Editing

When another editor edits the Brick, the Brick is locked, and the following message is displayed. This is intentional to prevent editing conflicts.

Read Only Mode

When another editor is editing, the Brick can still be opened in ‘read-only’ mode, but the user will see this message:

Inactivity Warning

When a collaborator has a Brick open but hasn’t recorded any activity in the last ten minutes, the ‘Inactivity Warning’ displays. Don’t worry – their work will be automatically saved!

Lock Removal

After an additional five minutes of inactivity, all work is saved, and the Brick is closed, which removes the ‘lock’ on the Brick and allows another editor to access it.

Publishing a Collaborative Brick

Anyone added as an editor can publish the Brick and choose to list it publicly. It will be associated with the school/organization of the Brick owner and added to their ‘My Organization’ page if the Brick is listed. It will not be added to the ‘My Organization’ page of other editors, but it will be added to their ‘My Bricks’ page.

AI Integration: Empowering Educators, Enhancing Learning

ScholarRx has integrated AI into Bricks Create. We hope you find the AI useful as you continue to create active learning experiences inside and outside your classrooms.

Question & Flash Card Generation

The Basic Blocks menu includes a ‘Generate Content’ section when the Bricks Create beta features are enabled. Beneath this section, two options utilize AI to quickly create questions or flash cards based on the content immediately above the insertion point.

To generate a question or a flash card with AI, please perform the following steps:

  1. Place your cursor where the question or flash card will be inserted
  2. Open the basic block menu and select the ‘Question’ or ‘Flash Card’ option. It will then be inserted.

Newly enhanced flashcards and questions for faculty creating Rx Bricks.

You can modify, build upon, or delete any of this content before publishing your Brick.

Learning Objectives & Summary

AI can also be used to generate Learning Objectives and Summary points.

To create Learning Objectives or Summary points, please perform the following steps:

1. Place your cursor in either the Learning Objectives or Summary sections & click the ‘Generate with AI’ option.

2. The AI assistant creates Learning Objectives or Summary points based on the content of the Brick. If you’d like to, you can add additional information to guide the assistant.

3. Click ‘Generate.’ When complete, you can replace what is already there, add to it, or dismiss what was created by AI. All content can be edited once it has been added to the Brick.

When creating a new Brick using either of these options, you must add a minimum of five paragraphs before you can see the AI tool in the Learning Objectives and Summary sections.

Feature Enhancements: Streamlining the ScholarRx Experience

While we’re always trying to create new products to make your teaching more effortless, we also prioritize enhancing and updating existing features to enrich your experience. Let’s take a closer look at those feature enhancements.

Enabling Beta Features

When you activate the Beta Features toggle, AI integration will be activated.

Bricks Create Tools

To access the Bricks Create tool set, please take the following steps:

  1. Click the ‘Add Item’ button or hit enter at the end of a vignette, and the ‘+’ icon will display.
  2. Click on the icon or type ‘/’ to make the ‘Basic Blocks’ menu display.
  3. Scroll through the menu displayed to find your desired vignette type.

Update to Active Learning Question Options

Active learning question types can now be found in the basic block menu.

Removal of the All Collections Menu Option

The ‘All Collections’ menu option has been removed from Bricks Create. You may access the Bricks in ‘All Collections’ from the Brick Exchange

We hope you find these feature enhancements helpful!
